John Reynolds (Former British Superbike Champion)
Every year, motorbikes become faster, more powerful and more sophisticated. At the same time, the roads get busier which means that bikers need to be far more clued up and keep their riding skills sharp to cope with the demands of today's roads and machines.
It doesn't matter how experienced a biker you are. You may have been riding for years or coming back to it after a break. The best riders never stop learning and everyone can benefit from additional training to keep their biking knowledge up-to-date, learn new skills and understand the capabilities and limits of their bike. The more you learn, the more you'll enjoy riding and the safer you'll be every time you go out on your bike.
BikeSafe is an initiative run by police forces across the UK where you learn from the experts who spend hours in the saddle every day. Experienced police motorcyclists pass on their skills and knowledge during the workshops to help you become a safer, more competent rider while improving your confidence at the same time.
The courses balance classroom-based know-how with assessed rides, covering hundreds of miles and putting the theory into practice. They can also advise you on additional training courses if you want to develop your riding skills even further. Click here to find out more about BikeSafe workshops in your area.
You can also win a BikeSafe course by visiting our competition section.
Also, consider taking an advanced motorcycle training test with RoSPA. Not only will you improve your riding and be placed among the best bikers in the country but you can also lower your insurance premiums, reduce stress and benefit from less wear and tear on your bike. There are a number of other motorcycle organisations around to help you improve your riding such as the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Look in the Yellow Pages for more details of courses and motorcycle schools in your area.
